Best of 2005: Up-and-comers

Some of the men and women (and boys and girls) on our 2005 up-and-comers list are long overdue for breaking through to the other side (that would be the mainstream); others are still finding their stride. Whatever the case may be, we applaud their stick-to-itiveness and for putting Asian-Americans where they belong: in the public consciousness.

Saving Face showcased several Asian American up-and-comers, including writer/director Alice Wu and actress Lynn Chen, but it was Michelle Krusiec in her first starring role that turned the most heads. As a medical student who falls for her boss’s daughter, Krusiec demonstrated a control and cool that was essential to keeping the film from falling into sentimental trappings, while still portraying the nervous fervor of blossoming love. Her ability to act convincingly in both English and Mandarin contributed to the film’s realism. It also drew acclaim from an unlikely source; Krusiec was nominated for best actress at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards, possibly the first American-born to receive such an honor. -- Brian Hu
